Nicola Hicks sculpture Brave is part of the Photographs | Contemporary Art: Recent Gifts and Acquisitions exhibition at the Yale Center for British Art. The center acquired the work for their permanent collection following it's inclusion in Hicks's solo exhibition Sculpture by Nicola Hicks in 2013.
In recent decades, the Yale Center for British Art’s collections of approximately 2,000 paintings and 60,000 prints and drawings, given by Paul Mellon, have been augmented by contributions from generous patrons who have donated works not only from the historic past but also from the last decades of the twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first.
In this exhibition, a selection of recent and promised gifts to the Center highlights outstanding works, both figurative and abstract, from British pop in the 1960s to the current moment.
Photographs | Contemporary Art: Recent Gifts and Acquisitions has been curated by Elisabeth Fairman, Chief Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts; Chitra Ramalingam, Associate Curator of Photography, and Acting Head of Prints and Drawings; Amy Meyers, Director; and Scott Wilcox, Deputy Director for Collections. They have been assisted by Molly Dotson, Assistant Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts.
