Carol Robertson Book Launch

Flowers Gallery is pleased to be hosting the launch of new publication 'Carol Robertson and Trevor Sutton: French Paintings' at Flowers Kingsland Road on Saturday 6 December 12-2pm. The 96 page book was published by Peter Foolen Editions in a limited edition run of 500 copies.

This book has been a joy to make …a true collaboration between ourselves and the Dutch book designer and publisher Peter Foolen. In 2008 we were invited to spend a month working in Alayrac, a tiny hamlet in the Gaillac region of the Midi Pyrenees. The studio is housed in a beautiful old building, high in the hills, surrounded by fields and vineyards. The sun rises on one side of the hill and sets on the other. Days spent here become a meditation upon nature's seasonal patterns and the changing quality of light. Since our initial visit we have returned three times for further month-long residencies. The book contains artworks, photographs and texts relating to our time spent there. It is a visual record of how this environment informs our practice as non-representational artists.

Robertson was an MA student at Chelsea School of Art in 1980 when she first met Sutton: he was a Senior Lecturer in Painting at Chelsea. They married in 1985 and they live and work in London. Both are abstract artists but each has distinctly different aesthetic sensibilities. They travel extensively together and have actively sought artist residencies that take them away from the urban intensity of London to more remote rural locations. In 2013 Sutton made a book titled Trevor Sutton - Irish Paintings based on over a decade of residencies at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in County Mayo, on the north west coast of Ireland. It is interesting to compare the response to a wild Atlantic coastline and its volatile weather with the rolling hills and southern climate of the Midi Pyrenees. Irish Paintings and French Paintings apply the same concept of relating location and environment with the formal language of geometric abstraction.

Attendees will have the chance to meet both artists and purchase the original book or one of a special edition of 20 numbered and signed copies including two original watercolours by Carol Robertson and Trevor Sutton. Please RSVP to Jessica@flowersgallery.com to attend.
