To coincide with our current exhibition Mono: An Exhibition of Unique Prints, Flowers Gallery will host a panel discussion with artists George Blacklock, Carol Robertson and Fiona Grady.

The exhibiting artists make up three generations of artist and student, George Blacklock having taught Carol Robertson, who went on to teach Fiona Grady. They will discuss their primary practice of painting and installations, and how it differs from the medium of printmaking. The role of the monoprint within printing practise, artist editions and the method of collaborating with printing studios.

George Blacklock (born in 1952 in County Durham) studied at Sunderland Polytechnic for one year before going on to study painting at Stourbridge College of Art. He graduated from his Masters at Reading University in 1976. George has exhibited extensively in Europe and North America throughout his career and has been represented by Flowers Gallery, London and New York, since 1996. He has received awards from the Welsh Arts Council, the Greater London Arts Association and was a winner at the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize. George Blacklock has work in major public collections including the Arts Council of Great Britain. The British painter has also been the Dean of Chelsea College of Art and Design, London since 2011.

Carol Robertson lives and works in London. She was Research Fellow in Painting at Cardiff School of Art & Design from 2003 - 2008. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and Europe, also in Japan and the USA. Since 2001 she has been a Returning Fellow at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ireland. In 2012 she was artist in residence at the Kunstgarten in Graz, where she made 3D objects for the first time. Robertson is known for her evocative paintings composed of the elemental form of the circle in delicately radiant colours with subtly transforming grounds. Working with a refined palette of closely related tones, Robertson believes in the powerful emotive and spiritual qualities of individual colours, using these to build complex layers of association.

Fiona Grady (born 1984, Leeds) studied BA Fine Art at the University of Wales In Cardiff (UWIC) 2004-2007 and MA Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art (UAL) 2010- 2011.  Grady has been short-listed for several printmaking prizes including Neo-print Prize, Bainbridge Open and Clifford Chance’s Survey of MA printmaking.  Her public commissions include Deptford Rail Station and Leeds Town Hall. Highlights of 2016 include Arts Council funded commissions by Gerald Moore Gallery, the Prison Drawing Project in Scarborough Old Town Prison and a solo residency at The Art House, Wakefield. This year she has been included in group exhibitions at Dalla Rosa and Sid Motion Gallery. She also had her first solo exhibition abroad at Adhoc in Germany and has an upcoming solo exhibition for Coventry Biennial.
