John Kirby's evocative and deeply moving work portrays an honest depiction of the human face. These studies are modest in size, generally featuring a single head. Whilst some of them are sublimated self-portraits, Kirby employs a careful use of light and a controlled colour palette to question and explore the personal identity of both himself and his subject.
My work, like that of all artists, is largely self portraiture but as a generalised view of the business of being human, and of being alive. -John Kirby
