Sculptural ceramic works that explore issues around industry, design, and the environment define Rebecca Griffiths' (b. 1984) practice. Working primarily with slab-built clay structures reminiscent of industrial components or mechanisms, Griffiths subjects these forms to processes of destruction and alteration, evoking geological change.
Salvaged and OUTAGE (11) were created following Griffiths' residency at The Red House- Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears' former home in Suffolk during 2022-23. During this time, she explored the nearby Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station and its surrounding coastal environment. These investigations inspired a series of ceramic sculptures that envision a future landscape in which remnants of the nuclear power industry have been dredged from the North Sea. Fragmented industrial forms appear to collide and merge, their surfaces scarred by geological forces and encrusted with both natural and toxic sediments.
Griffiths works from her studio in South East London.
