Lucy Jones It's a long way to the bottom of this canvas, 2000
86 x 61 3/4 in
In this work Lucy Jones plays with perspective to allude to challenges within her everyday life. As in many of her works, Jones places herself on an extreme edge of the canvas, Here, she precariously walks down the vertical right-hand side of the painting, staring directly at her glasses and walking stick, both of which she has dropped. The objects float amongst the purple background, as if they are free-falling ahead of her. The prominence of and reliance on glasses and walking sticks are recurring features within her self-portraits, with Jones signifying it would take her a long time to make her way to retrieve them.
