John Kirby In the Morning, 2008 - 09
35 1/4 x 35 1/4 in
In the Morning offers intimate access to a domestic scene, capturing a male couple in shared slumber. The characters are turned away from each other, with one man awake, while the other is turned away and asleep. The couple is in differing, individual states between dream and reality. A window presents a coded image of a cross, partially visible through closed blinds, looming large over the couple. For Kirby, the bedroom is steeped in the presence of religious ubiquity, just as it is invested in a perpetual sense of existential crisis.
