Peter Howson Salvation, 2026

The exhibition's title artwork, Salvation, presents Christ crucified within a desolate and abandoned landscape. His fragile body is emphasised through stark contrasts of light and shadow, exposing his muscles and bones. Large nails hold him against the wooden cross, while the INRI stands for the Latin phrase 'Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum', which translates to 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.' 

Four dark figures gather beneath the cross, looking upwards in awe, while ruined buildings frame the scene. Above them, heavy black clouds are broken by a powerful light surrounding Christ, creating a contrast between darkness, suffering, and divine presence.
