Peter Howson Noli Me Tángere (Touch me not), 2024
30 x 23 1/2 in
Framed: 95 x 80 cm
Created in 2024, Noli Me Tangere (Touch me not) depicts Mary Magdalene encountering Christ after the Resurrection. Although the two figures stand close together, a visible gap separates them, reinforcing the idea that their relationship must now become spiritual rather than physical. Mary Magdalene looks intensely towards Christ as he moves his hand away from her, revealing the stigmata in his palm. Christ avoids her gaze, his hair falling across his face. The warm red of his robe contrasts with Mary's cool blue and grey clothing, reinforcing the visual tension between the human and the divine.
