London-based artist Trevor Sutton (b 1948) makes art that embodies the restraints of a ritualistic and pragmatic process with that of pure sensual pleasure. The atmospheric references to landscape visible in much of his work have been superseded by a significant withdrawal to a less referential abstract position. Where formerly his colour-saturated works have offered the viewer remote spaces in which to place their imaginings, the re-emergence of the grid now takes precedence.
Etching, aquatint, and drypoint are combined in printmaking to create detailed lines (etching and drypoint) and rich tonal areas (aquatint) on the same plate for a dynamic, textured image.
British artist Trevor Sutton is represented in public collections including the Tate Gallery, London, and Pallant House, Chichester.
