While living in Johannesburg, Jason Larkin was struck by the ever-present reality of people waiting. Inactive yet expectant, this condition becomes a visual echo of the predicament that many South Africans can find themselves in. Larkin was drawn to those seeking shelter from the harsh summer sun by positioning themselves in the shade. As part of the project Jason is exhibiting large format outdoor prints around the neighbourhood of Braamfontien, Johannesburg. There are nine outdoor prints in total located on the sides of buildings, alleyways, central squares and shop fronts. A map detailing their location can be downloaded here. A new 40 page colour book documenting the project designed by Oliver Barstow is also available to purchase from Photoworks London. Within the publication, each image is accompanied only by the waiting period, leaving the purpose or possible outcome of these situations unclear. Viewers are then left to meditate on the temporality of these individual situations and the indirect connections that waiting creates across society.
