Peter Howson's The Massacre of Srebrenica unveiled at the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, Glasgow

10 December 2019

Peter Howson's painting 'The Massacre of Srebrenica' will be on view at St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art in Glasgow. The painting will be on loan to Glasgow Museums for an initial three-year period and commemorates the 1995 massacre of Srebrenica which claimed the lives of over 8000 men and boys.

Howson worked as Britain's official war artist during the civil war in Bosnia, and described the conflict as "hell on earth".

"I tried to capture the fear on their faces and the twisting contortions of bodies awaiting execution with a bullet. Very little film of the prelude to death is recorded. It would have been different if it happened today in the age of the smartphone.

... The perpetrators show no emotion, just a will to get the job done. The beauty of the countryside is a chilling juxtaposition to the horror of the scene."
