Jakkai Siributr featured in The Archipelagic Imagination
Featuring two works by Jakkai Siributr the two-part exhibition 'The Archipelagic Imagination: Seaport & Upland' is on view in Shanghai at Almine Rech and Bao Room by Bao Foundation. Curated by Zong Hahn, the exhibitions explore the metaphor of 'archipelagic thinking' and the historical role of seafaring networks in shaping Southeast Asia, 'gesturing toward a South imagined through circulation, depth, and shared inheritance'.
Siributr's textile work 'CG20' (2023) is included in the exhibition's first chapter 'Seaport' at Almine Rech. Shown in 'Outworn' at Flowers Hong Kong in 2023-24, 'CG20' weaves together deconstructed uniforms with talismanic objects and military regalia, creating a collision of beliefs, memories, and identities.
The second chapter, 'Upland', at Bao Room features 'Sompong' (2023), which was exhibited in 'Matrilineal', at the 100 Tonson Foundation in 2023-4. The work reflects on the intersection of personal and national histories, paying tribute to Siributr's great-aunt Sompong, whose father was judicially executed for the death of King Rama VIII. Embroidery of Sompong's life is collaged with antique Burmese Kalaga tapestry, feathers, and beads, covering red placemats which belong to the artist's family.
