Lucy Jones Lucy Jones with Her Walking Stick, 1996
86 x 61 3/4 in
This painting displays Lucy Jones' entire body at almost life-size. Her feet are pointed together, emphasising the impact of cerebral palsy on the positioning and movement of her limbs. By placing herself on the left side of the canvas, the composition of the painting appears unbalanced, further accentuating the unsteadiness and instability of her body. Grasped in her hands are two key aspects of Jones’ character: her walking stick and her paintbrush. Bold background colours of yellow and purple are repeated to highlight shadows on her face and within her hands, drawing attention to both her physical challenges as well as her ability to create art.
