Lucy Jones Going Swimming, 1997
85 3/4 x 61 3/4 in
Set against a bright blue gestural background, Jones appears to be standing on a beach, justified to the left within a vivid yellow "sandy" segment of the painting. Described as a modern-day fauvist, Jones includes vibrant and dynamic colours in her work, evocative of the palettes used by Derain, Rouault and Vlaminck.
In 2006 Sue Hubbard wrote that Lucy Jones ‘through the act of painting self-portraits...has found completeness, wholeness, a reconciliation with her condition that is without an ounce of self-pity...Lucy Jones’ acts of seeing, her honesty, her self-scrutiny lead her to produce powerful images of striking simplicity.’
