Born in 1939, British artist John Loker produces rigorously conceived, meticulously crafted, and visually mesmerising works of art across many different media. Loker is a classic twentieth-century abstract artist in his dialectical approach to image making. His images derive from the simplifications of landscape, natural phenomena, and familiar objects, from ditches and copses to cauldrons and spinning tops, and material taken from current affairs like space shuttles and border crossings.
Chack Chacking Choppers overhead, the shattering of the silence over the dark flatlands - proclaiming the preparation of an unsettling future. I explored this in work during 2020/23 - in this piece I have revisited those thoughts. -John Loker, 2025
After a studio show in 1969, Loker was one of the first artists to hold a solo exhibition at Angela Flowers Gallery in 1970 and then the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, the following year.
Further exhibitions include The Art of John Loker, Cartwright Hall, Bradford, 2018; The Chelsea Arts Club, London, 1999; and the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol, 1981.
