UK-based Alexandra Baraitser (b. 1971) paints ordinary, everyday objects related to domestic interiors. The contemporary still life paintings draw on environments which the artist understands as intensively 'designed', in formal modernist ways. Baraitser's work is suggestive of liminal experiences, emotions, and memories, transporting her subject to the edge of abstraction. The Caravan explores the combination of strong colour and soft brushwork, with detailed paint. Empty of figures, Baraitser produces a stillness in the scene, focusing on the aesthetics of design.
In 2025, Baraitser was the joint winner of the Young Masters Art Prize People's Choice Award.
