UK-based Alexandra Baraitser (b. 1971) paints ordinary, everyday objects related to domestic interiors. The contemporary still life paintings draw on environments which the artist understands as intensively 'designed', in formal modernist ways. Baraitser's work is suggestive of liminal experiences, emotions, and memories, transporting her subject to the edge of abstraction. By Lamp Light is based upon a photograph by the artist of a design shop in Copenhagen. The objects in the shop are depicted with saturated colours and strange perspectives, transforming it from the reality and drabness of everyday life.
In 2025, Baraitser was the joint winner of the Young Masters Art Prize People's Choice Award.
