Changes in light result in instantly perceptible colour variation. Josef Albers explored these subtle changes in his series of prints, Day + Night, recently on view at Cristea Roberts Gallery. My recent check series also focused on the visible difference in the same colour seen in different lights. In 'crosscut section: day + light 1' and 'crosscut section: day + light 2' I have taken a section from my recent monochrome painting crosscut, made for my exhibition 'The Spaces Between', but borrowed colours from the Albers series.
My current interest in Albers stems partly from a commission to make a print in response to a print in the collection at Durham University. I chose to respond to their Albers print Variant II. My work and the Albers print were shown alongside each other at Platform A in Middlesbrough in Printed Response from August 21 to September 18 2025.
