Through layered abstraction, interdisciplinary artist Freya Tewelde's (b. 1977) practice explores the intersections of material, memory, and the unseen. Tewelde is of Eritrean heritage who spent her formative years in Saudi Arabia. Working across painting, moving image, and installation, Tewelde builds her surfaces through forming spaces that oscillate between the physical and the psychospiritual. She lives and works in London and holds an MA in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Arts.
The paintings emerge through improvisation and quiet attunement, suggesting moments of stillness within movement. Their scale invites close contemplation, drawing the viewer into subtle transitions of tone, rhythm, and space.
