British sculptor Nigel Hall RA (b. 1943) produces works primarily in steel, copper, aluminum, and polished wood, exploring the relationships between three-dimensional space, mass, and line.
String Section was inspired by a string quartet Hall heard playing at Wigmore Hall. Reflecting the instruments' forms and musical rhythm, the sculpture seeks stillness and weightlessness, while its polished copper surface embraces and incorporates the surrounding space.
In 2011, the Royal Academy of Art, London, held a major solo exhibition 'Artists' Laboratory 03: Nigel Hall RA: In Transit', exhibiting his drawings and sculptures. Recent solo exhibitions include Magdalene College, Cambridge (2024) and Towner, Eastbourne (2024).
