Dublin-based Frances Ryan (b. 1960) graduated as a mature student from Fine Art from IADT in 1997. She has exhibited in Ireland and the UK, with her most recent solo exhibition 'A Meditation on Birds' at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in 2024. Ryan's practice explores themes of ephemerality, fragility and resiliance in relation to the natural world and marvels at how daily encounters with her immediate environment can provide the impetus to create work where memory and emotion converge.
Peony I and Peony II are an exploration of the flower's lush, layered petals which evoke the charm of old-fashioned garden roses. The artist eagerly anticipates "peony season" each year, seeking to capture the fleeting beauty of these blossoms whose fragrance evokes nostalgic memories of time spent in their mother's garden.
