Philip Braham's (b. 1959) paintings recall the Northern Romantic tradition in which the landscape reflects aspects of the human condition. Through rigorous observation and attention to the play of light on land, he senses a connection with nature such that it reveals his emotions, thoughts and memories.
'Picasso's House, Winter' depicts the Chateau Vauvenagues in Provence. It is situated in the shadows of Mont Sainte-Victoire, which particularly delighted Picasso as he was an ardent admirer of Cézanne. After his death, Picasso was laid to rest in the grounds of chateau. When the funeral cortege made its way to the burial mound the grounds were covered in a blanket of snow, which was unusual for that time of year. He died on April 8th, 1973, on my 14th birthday.
