Philip Braham's (b. 1959) paintings recall the Northern Romantic tradition in which the landscape reflects aspects of the human condition. Through rigorous observation and attention to the play of light on land, he senses a connection with nature such that it reveals his emotions, thoughts and memories.
In 2010, Braham was part of a small group of European artists invited to Yemen by the government. The painting Moonrise, Sanaa was inspired by this trip, showing a yellow moon rising over the scrubland at the city's edge.
Conflict is man-made, destructive and degrading, yet there is a simple beauty to the world that seems lost in the turmoil of perpetual conflict.
