Stephen Buckley (b. 1944) is a key figure in post-war British art, renowned for his experimental, sculptural approach to painting. Trained under Richard Hamilton at Kings College, Newcastle, his work deconstructs the traditional canvas using mixed media including rope, tubing, and stitched fabric. His 1991 Crazy Paving print series comprises colour etchings with aquatint, exemplifying Buckley’s fusion of abstract form and tangible texture. The prints reveal a fractured, irregular format seen in the "crazy paving" style of laying paving stones, connected in an organic yet structured mosaic-like rhythmic composition, mirroring Buckley’s sculptural painting practice and exploring spatial interplay in a two-dimensional format.
The Crazy Paving series is in the collection of the University of Reading, and Buckley’s work is represented in major international collections including Tate, London and The Metropolitian Museum of Art, New York.
