Gile's paintings communicate directly through the use of colour, shape, composition and scale. The abstract, elemental forms found in her large-scale paintings draw inspiration from the architectural landscapes of London, where she lives and works Set across multiple raw canvas panels, Giles intuitively reconfigures the paintings to produce new shapes and unexpected compositions. Hard line edges contrast with free, painterly mark-making, creating a tension between shapes and a push and pull between positive and negative space.
My works are driven by an impetus to 'switch off' and re-engage with our instinct, an insistent, inexplicable voice within us that communicates an emotion or feeling . In our technological and fast-paced world, it is increasingly vital we don't render ourselves blind to that deep primal aptitude and visual language, so often drowned out by the noise around us. - Liza Giles
