Scarlett Hooft Graafland Brooms, 2025
7 7/8 x 7 7/8 in
Inhabiting the border between photography, performance, and sculpture, Scarlett Hooft Graafland (b. 1973) documents highly choreographed live performances in remote and often surreal landscapes, including the Bolivian salt desert, the Canadian Arctic, Madagascar, Socotra (Yemen), Vanuatu, China, and Oman. Her work engages deeply with the cultural and mythological context of each location. Hooft Graafland utilises the medium of photography, associated with the representation of truth, to depict the fantastic and the irrational.
Hooft Graafland's work has been shown internationally including at MOCCA Museum, Toronto; Huis Marseille Museum of Photography, Amsterdam; the Museum of Photography, Seoul; and Fotografiska Museum, Stockholm. In 2025, Museum Panorama Mesdag presented an acclaimed survey exhibition, ‘Scarlett Hooft Graafland: Mesmerizing’.
