Overview
From 2010 - 2019, Scottish artist Ken Currie worked on a special series of figurative panels depicting characters from paintings by the Old Masters that he most admires. For Currie, these works are a three-way conversation between the two artists and the sitter, exploring a personal need to be humbled by a great Master's mark making whilst combining it with his own visual language.
Within this series these emotive figures have been translated into miniatures painted exquisitely on gesso panels, encouraging the viewer to connect more directly with each portrait individually. Currie has explained that when shown together he sees a band of ghosts from the past. Whether royalty or an unknown figure, all the characters are no more, subject to the same laws of mortality.
