This Way Up, Tom Lovelace's second published book, has been made in response to his recent solo exhibition of the same title at Flowers Gallery in 2015. Presented in two sections, the first 30 spreads of the book depict abstractions of works from the show, or unseen works in full. This first section was conceived as a form of fabric flick book, where colour, texture and surface all take precedent. The exhibition focused on the fabric and materiality of photography, and investigated themes of abstraction and disorientation, which this publication continues to explore.
This section is followed by Snip Snip, a specially commissioned essay by Rye Dag Holmboe. The text provides a helpful insight into a set of previously unseen artworks which are intentionally hard to navigate - hence the title of the show.
