When Painting Collapses, You Have Beautiful Sculptures

This catalogue was published to coincide with the artist's solo exhibition When Painting Collapses, You Have Beautiful Sculptures, 17 May - 29 June 2013.

Cedric Christie was born in London in 1962, where he continues to live and work. His practice explores a broad range of cultural and art historical references, often using humour and irony as subtle vehicles of communication. He incorporates and manipulates everyday objects such as snooker balls, scaffolding, and even cars to create sculptures that are meticulously and skillfully made.

This collection explores Christie’s personal endeavour to transform one medium into another, and comprises of two bodies of work: Christie’s sculptural response to a gallery space, and work developed during a residency in Kleve, Germany. Christie incorporates the principles of Russian Constructivism into his use of building materials, dynamic rhythm and tension between the lines of his sculptures.
