Cedric Christie and Nancy Fouts works feature in The Centre Point Letters Auction

The Centre Point Letters

VIVI, Centre Point, London WC2H 8AP

Monday 24 June 7.00 pm

Cedric Christie and Nancy Fouts were among the artists invited to re-imagine the iconic Centrepoint signage for a charity auction.

Since 1966, from its unique vantage point in London’s Soho, the 34-storey Centre Point tower has witnessed the ebb and flow of communities and customs, ideas and innovation. When redevelopment began in 2015 turning the building from office space to flats, the original tiered neon lights were no longer fit for purpose and had to be replaced with LED lights.

Almacantar, the property investment and development company behind the redevelopment, collaborated with Patrick Morey-Burrows of ArtSource on various commissions at Centre Point and approached him for ideas on the restoration of the original letters. Each letter was given to an artist to appropriate.

The re-imagined letters will be auctioned individually by The Auction Collective on 24 June at VIVI restaurant in collaboration with Christie’s. All proceeds will be donated to the charity Centrepoint, that works to give homeless young people a future in the capital and the rest of the UK.

“The ‘C’ is crushed steel panels and the colours, blue and red, chose me more than I chose them, in the way that colour always does. Colour says something to you. It gives you an answer or a question. These colours said, ‘This is it. Leave me alone.’”

“When the letter arrived, it was so heavy it took three men to bring it into my garden. My thought was to make it into sailor’s beadwork, so I removed the electrics and Perspex, painted the metal to make it look like wood and filled the inside with foam. I used whatever I found in the studio to adorn it. It tickled me to decorate something so gigantic with tiny beads and trinkets.” - Nancy Fouts. theauctioncollective.com/auctions/the-centre-point-letters/nancy-fouts-n/
