Biography

GABBY LAURENT (b 1985)

Inspired by feminist and performance art history, London-based artist Gabby Laurent's practice unites photography and performance, investigating notions of aggression, control, vulnerability, motherhood and domesticity.

In Falling, a five-year project completed in 2021, Laurent photographed herself repeatedly mid-fall, exploring the idea of 'falling' both in its slapstick and vulnerable connotations.
The series was published as a photobook by Loose Joints in 2021.

Photographing herself in hand-made garments made from household materials, Laurent's ongoing series Wearables explores the ways in which the domestic can be both a source of comfort and restriction. Laurent explains: "I wanted to feel powerful and dominant. But there are also the connotations of the domestic, it’s very female and mothering, and a lot of the materials used are soft. But there is power in them."

Gabby Laurent graduated with a Photography MA from Plymouth University in 2017. Laurent also works as a commercial photographer with clients including Vogue, The V&A, The Financial Times, Christie's, Armani, Harper's Bazaar US and Wallpaper.
